VIDEO: Minnesota Woman Shares How a Simple Date Night Turned Into a Terrifying Moment She’ll Never Forget
I remember trying to stand up, and there was the panic of knowing I was in the middle of 35W
A warm May evening, a romantic ride, and one split-second decision... that’s what changed everything for Lisa Dugan.
In a powerful story shared by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Lisa recalls how what started as a simple date night with her husband in 2021 turned into a moment she’ll never forget. One that could have ended far worse than it did.

It was nearly 90 degrees when Lisa stepped outside that evening. She was already wearing leather pants lined with Kevlar, a purchase she says felt like a splurge, but one her sister encouraged. “And my sister said I’d never regret buying them,” Lisa remembers.
Her husband, Trevor, asked her to add one more thing, a leather jacket. She hesitated in the heat but put it on anyway.
That decision may have saved her life.
After dinner in Minneapolis, the couple hopped on their motorcycles for the ride home. Lisa was following Trevor as they approached the I-94 and I-35W interchange. While merging into an open lane, she spotted a pothole too late and couldn’t avoid it at 60 mph.
The impact bucked her motorcycle. Lisa flipped over the handlebars and slid down the freeway, landing directly in front of oncoming traffic.
The entire terrifying crash was caught on video (included below), showing Lisa flipping, bouncing, and skidding across the pavement as vehicles screeched to a stop behind her.
“It’s really foggy at that moment,” she said. “I knew that I had crashed and had slid quite a way down the freeway. And I remember trying to stand up, and there was the panic of knowing I was in the middle of 35W and needing to get out of the lanes because I didn’t want to get hit by traffic.”
Trevor and nearby drivers rushed to help. At the ER, Lisa recalls a doctor telling her they typically don’t see riders survive crashes at that speed.
Lisa credits one thing: her gear.
“My helmet saved my life,” she said. “The gear that I had on, I would say, it saved my limbs from permanent damage.”
Despite suffering a brain injury from the crash, Lisa was able to leave the hospital the next day.
Her story is a sobering, yet hopeful reminder of how protective gear (yes, even when it’s hot) can make the difference between life and death.
