Southeast Minnesota Winter Storm Update: Snowfall and Crash Totals are In

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- The preliminary snowfall and crash totals following Rochester’s first significant snowfalls of the season are in.

A Winter Weather Advisory is set to expire in Rochester at 6 a.m. on Wednesday. A Winter Storm Warning for communities in Fillmore and Houston Counties will also expire at 6 a.m. on Wednesday

The preliminary snowfall totals gathered by the National Weather Service say Rochester saw between 1.5 and 2.1 inches of snow. The official snow tally at the Rochester Airport was 1.8 inches. 

2.4 inches of snow was reported along Hwy. 52 northwest of Chatfield. That's the highest snowfall total reported so far in Olmsted County. 

The highest snowfall total reported so far in southeast Minnesota is five inches in the Houston County community of Eitzen.

Mabel is reported to have picked up the most snow in Fillmore County at 3.2 inches while Winona received two inches and 1.7 inches of snow fell in Austin.

The snowfall caused slick travel conditions during Tuesday morning’s commute. The State Patrol responded to eight property damage crashes, nine vehicle spinouts and a jack-knifed semi between 4 a.m. and 11 a.m. in southeast Minnesota Tuesday.

The National Weather Service is predicting the snowfall will move out of the area by Tuesday afternoon, however forecasted 30-40 mph wind gusts could deteriorate travel conditions throughout the afternoon and into the evening. 

The forecast calls for the winds to begin dying down by late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
