World War II Grenades Prompt Bomb Squad Response to Northfield
Northfield, MN (KROC-AM News) - The St. Paul Police Department Bomb Squad was dispatched to Northfield Monday night to deal with what appeared to be some World War II era hand grenades.
The Northfield Police Department says it received a call late Monday afternoon concerning explosives that had been found in a garage. A news release says the responding officers learned the family living in the home discovered the grenades while cleaning out the garage.
The bomb squad from St. Paul arrived Monday evening and safely removed what were described as World War II Japanese grenades. Northfield police say the bomb squad transported the grenades and will eventually destroy them.
The news release indicates that evacuations were not needed because the grenades had been stored in the garage for some time and had not been moved by anyone. The statement goes on to say that Northfield police relied on the expertise of the bomb squad technicians, who were able to safely remove the grenades without the need for an evacuation.

There will not be a criminal investigation related to the incident and Northfield police say there is no ongoing danger to the public.
It is believed the grenades were left behind by a family member who had served in the military.
