The National Weather Service in La Crosse is closely monitoring two snow systems that could make getting around tough as we head into the weekend.

Snowfall in SE Minnesota Could Impact Friday Evening Commute

Snow is expected to move in Friday afternoon, starting in southeastern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa before spreading into western Wisconsin.

The timing isn’t great as the heaviest snow could fall during the evening commute, with some areas seeing a snowfall rate of 1 inch per hour That means roads could get slick fast, and visibility may be poor.

Current forecasts show the Rochester area has a 63% chance of getting two or more inches of snow. The further east we go, the higher the probability is for more than two inches of snow.

Most of western Wisconsin has an 85-90% chance of getting at least two inches of snow Friday, with some areas possibly seeing more than four inches. If you have to travel, be ready for snow-covered roads and take extra care on highways like Interstate 90 and Highway 61.

Saturday Brings More Snow to SE Minnesota, Western Wisconsin, Northern Iowa

After Friday’s snow, there’s not much of a break. Another round is likely on Saturday, with the heaviest snow expected mainly south of Interstate 90, according to NWS forecasters.

"Right now it looks like another 1-3" could fall but there are some low chances for higher amounts as seen in the graphic," NWS says.
