Rochester, MN Gets Millions in Federal Funds for Park-and-Ride
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- The City of Rochester is the recipient of millions of dollars in federal funding to construct a new park-and-ride.
The Federal Transit Authority announced Rochester as one of 130 recipients across the county of a portion of $1.7 billion from the Federal Infrastructure law. The City of Rochester was one of four organizations in Minnesota to be awarded federal funding.
The announcement, issued Monday, indicates Rochester is in line to receive $7.44 million. The money will fund a park-and-ride that will be built outside of the downtown area and offer passengers a place to connect to multiple Rochester Public Transit routes to take them to jobs and other opportunities in the community.
The City has been aiming to add parking to the Rochester Recreation Center near the intersection of North Broadway Ave. and Elton Hills Dr. The federal dollars to construct the two-deck parking ride would be used for commuters during weekdays and allow for parking for Rec. Center events on evenings and weekends.
Transit officials say the park-and-ride will increase demand for public transit and reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions. Metro Transit, White Earth Reservation Business Committee and MnDOT on behalf of two southwest Minnesota organizations were the other Minnesota recipients of the federal funds.
Monday’s funding announcement indicates more than $27.14 million federal dollars will be sent to Minnesota through the Low- or No-Emission Vehicle Program and Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Program.
