City of Minneapolis Calls for Accountability, Urges Peace After Fatal Federal Shooting
ICE — get the f*** out of Minneapolis - Mayor Jacob Frey
Minneapolis leaders condemned federal immigration agents and called for accountability after a fatal shooting, while Republican lawmakers blamed city and state rhetoric and defended law enforcement actions.
Minneapolis, MN (MinnesotaNow) — City of Minneapolis leaders are calling for accountability and justice following a fatal shooting involving federal law enforcement earlier Wednesday in south Minneapolis, while also urging residents to respond with peace and unity.
The shooting happened near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue and involved federal immigration agents. City officials say 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was killed.

“We've dreaded this moment since the early stages of this ICE presence in Minneapolis,” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said during a news conference. “This was a federal agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying.”

According to the City of Minneapolis, just after 9:30 a.m., Minneapolis police officers responded to reports of shots fired and found a woman inside a vehicle suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.
Minneapolis firefighters removed the victim from the vehicle and immediately began lifesaving efforts until paramedics arrived. She was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, where she later died.
“To the family of the person who was killed — we are deeply sorry,” Frey said. “There are no words that can make this moment better. Our hearts are with you.”
Mayor Condemns Federal Immigration Enforcement Actions
Frey sharply criticized the actions of federal immigration agents, saying their presence in Minneapolis has led to chaos and directly contributed to the deadly incident.
“ICE — get the f*** out of Minneapolis,” Frey said in a press conference Wednesday afternoon. “We do not want you here. Your stated purpose for being in this City is to create some kind of safety, but you are doing exactly the opposite.”
City officials said the federal government must take responsibility not only for the harm caused, but also for preventing further loss of life.
“People are being hurt, families are being ripped apart, long-term Minneapolis residents who have contributed greatly to our city, to our culture, to our economy are being terrorized and now, someone is dead,” Frey said. “That’s on you. It’s also on you to leave. It’s on you to make sure that further damage, further loss of life and injury is not done.”
Frey said the city will move quickly to seek accountability.
“We will pursue justice — and we will do so as quickly as possible,” he said.
Message to the Community: Remain Peaceful
City leaders also acknowledged the anger and pain many residents are feeling and urged people not to escalate tensions.
“We know the agenda of this federal administration is to create chaos and we’re asking for residents and community members to rise to the occasion and show our best selves,” Frey said.
The City urged residents not to take actions that could be used to justify further federal escalation or a militarized response.
“Do not take the bait,” Frey said. “They want an excuse to come in and show the kind of force that will create more chaos and more despair. Let's not let them. Let's rise to this occasion. Let's show them something far more beautiful than the kind of division that they're trying to stoke.”

Frey emphasized the city’s support for all residents, including immigrant and refugee communities.
“If you are angry, we understand — we are angry too,” he said. “If you are feeling despair, we ask you to show up with peace. We are going to meet that injustice with constitutional justice ourselves.”
Republican Lawmakers Criticize City, Governor After Shooting
Republican lawmakers also weighed in on the shooting, sharply criticizing the response from Minneapolis leaders and Governor Tim Walz, and defending the actions of federal law enforcement.
State Sen. Steve Drazkowski blamed city and state leaders for what he described as an increasingly dangerous environment for law enforcement.
“Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey have engaged in provocative and inflammatory rhetoric that demonizes law enforcement and puts law enforcement officers in danger, and today someone is dead because of it,” Drazkowski said. “A woman attempted to deploy a dangerous weapon, her vehicle, on a federal law enforcement agent and that agent was forced to respond. It is a sadly predictable result. Gov. Walz and Mayor Frey have blood on their hands.”
State Sen. John Jasinski also commented on the incident, urging calm while expressing support for law enforcement.
“My thoughts are with the family of the deceased and with law enforcement officers at all levels who seem to be facing greater danger every day,” Jasinski said. “I understand emotions are high right now, and peaceful protests are absolutely a right, but we cannot continue to put law enforcement officers in danger like this.”
Jasinski said investigators will determine exactly what happened and called on state and city leaders to “tone down the anti-law enforcement comments.”
State and federal investigations into the shooting are ongoing. No additional details about the incident or the agent involved have been released.
