The deadly shooting occurred in Minneapolis on the morning of September 18, 2022. It happened in Minneapolis’s Loring Park neighborhood, which is just west of the downtown.
Officers responding to the shooting found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds to leg and chest. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead about 40 minutes after the shooting was reported.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner identified the homicide victim as 28-year-old Birahim Gildersleve of Rochester. A GoFundMe page says he was laid to rest at Oakwood cemetery in Rochester in October of 2022.
Through surveillance footage and fingerprint analysis, investigators identified the suspected shooter as 27-year-old Mayan Deng Mayan.
The criminal complaint says Mayan was seen on video firing a gun at Gildersleve while he was standing outside. Mayan the fled the scene in a vehicle that was later found in Apple Valley.
Mayan was initially charged with second-degree murder in February of 2023. A Hennepin County Grand Jury then indicted Mayan with first-degree premeditated murder, a crime carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison in the event of a conviction, in August.
In September Mayan entered a plea agreement in which he pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder charge in exchange for the dismissal of the first-degree murder count.
On Monday Mayan was sentenced to 34 years and six months in prison. He was credited with 585 days already served behind bars.
