Fiery Fatal Construction Zone Crash Shuts Down Minnesota Interstate
Afton, MN (KROC-AM News)- A wrong-way driver is suspected to have caused a fiery fatal crash on a stretch of interstate in eastern Minnesota.
The State Patrol responded to the construction zone crash at the Manning Ave. exit on I-94, which is about 11 miles east of St. Paul. The crash happened around 3:30 Saturday morning.
The state crash report indicates a pick-up truck was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of I-94 when it collided head-on with a FedEx semi truck. The two vehicles burst into flames.
The FedEx driver was rescued from the fiery crash while the pick-up driver, who was trapped inside of the vehicle he was driving, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner is working to identify the pick-up driver.
The FedEx driver, identified as 69-year-old Thomas Loran Roberts of Eau Claire, WI, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. I-94 traffic in both has been shifted to what are usually the westbound lanes due to the road work.
Traffic in both directions was rerouted for about five hours Saturday morning. I-94 east remains closed as of 10 a.m. Saturday morning.
