For their "names going extinct" report, BabyCenter says they examined the top 1,000 names for boys and girls based on babies born in 2024, identifying the names with the steepest year-over-year drops compared to 2023.

What’s behind the drop in popularity of the once-popular names? BabyCenter offered some insight into their State of Baby Names initiative sharing several key highlights:
Millennial Favorites Fade Away
BabyCenter says some of the names experiencing the steepest declines were wildly popular during the Millennial era of the ‘80s and ‘90s.
Jaime, Erin, Kelsey, Chelsea, Taylor... names we all grew up hearing regularly are no longer resonating with today’s parents, they want trendier, more unique names for their kids.

Royal Names Are Becoming Less Popular
Minnesota and the rest of the country are royally over names tied to British royalty, like Catherine, Anne, Phillip, Albert, and Edward.
With so much influence from pop culture today, young parents are now looking for more modern choices, fueled by the desire to get away from the traditional name norms of older generations.

Nicknames No More
Another major trend highlighted in the report is the decline of traditional nickname names.
So when it comes to names like Katie, Liv, Andy, and Billy, parents are now going with the full versions instead... Kaitlyn, Olivia, Andrew, and William.
