Credit River, MN (MinnesotaNow) - A woman convicted of a murder in an affluent southern Minnesota suburban community has been sentenced to 25½ years in prison.

Forty-seven-year-old Jennifer Lynn Lieber was convicted of a second-degree murder charge during a trial in January. She was accused of fatally shooting her live-in boyfriend.

Police Asked to Check on "Weird" Behavior

According to court documents, Lieber was arrested on the night of March 4, 2024, after Scott County Sheriff's Office deputies were sent to her home in the town of Credit River near Prior Lake to perform a welfare check. Her soon-to-be ex-husband had called from another location expressing concern about her “weird” behavior.

Victim Found Covered in Blood

The criminal complaint says responding deputies were met by a friend of Lieber at her home. The woman told officers she saw 47-year-old David Nanovic covered in blood and lying at the bottom of the stairs inside the home.

She also stated that she spoke with Lieber, who claimed Nanovic had a gun that went off when she kicked it out of his hand. According to court documents, deputies then spoke with Lieber by phone, and she exited the house. Inside, deputies located Nanovic at the bottom of the stairs with a fatal gunshot wound to his head and a handgun next to his body.

10 Year Old Witness

While investigating the fatal shooting, the criminal complaint says deputies later spoke with the victim’s 10-year-old son, who was found in the pool house on the property. The boy told investigators he and his father had been living in the home and that his father had been involved in a romantic relationship with Lieber.

The child went on to describe a situation that developed that evening while they were sitting on the couch watching TV. The court document says he told investigators that Lieber became very agitated, armed herself with a handgun, pointed it at them, and threatened to kill them while directing racial slurs at his father.

"Living in Hell"

The child also told deputies that Lieber had been drinking beer and blackberry brandy throughout the evening. He described the home environment as “living in hell.”

According to the charges against Lieber, the boy and the victim eventually went to the adjacent pool house, where his father received a call from one of Lieber’s juvenile children, who expressed concern about the welfare of the family’s dog. That led the boy and his father to later attempt to approach the home, but they retreated when they were confronted by Lieber, who allegedly told them not to come inside and fired a shot.

Last Time He Saw Him

The criminal complaint says the boy told investigators his father later decided to make another attempt to get inside the home. He described seeing his father enter with his hands raised and told deputies it was the last time he saw him.
