Ely, MN (KROC-AM News) - An investigator from the State Fire Marshal's Office is searching for the cause of a deadly house fire in far northern Minnesota.

According to the Ely Fire Department, the fire was reported shortly after 11 PM on Monday. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found thick smoke and flames coming from the back of a single family home.

A news release says firefighters tried to enter the house, but were turned back due to heavy heat and smoke. Following a rapid initial fire suppression operation, another search was mounted and a woman was found inside.

The Ely Fire Department says the victim was carried out of the home and rushed to the hospital in Ely by ambulance where she was later pronounced dead. Two dogs also perished in the fire.

The name of the victim has not been released.
