Victim of Austin, MN Shooting Airlifted to Rochester, Suspect Charged with Attempted Murder
Austin, MN (KROC-AM News)- The Mower County Attorney’s Office has failed attempted murder and felony assault charges against an Austin man accused of carrying out a shooting that wounded two people early Saturday morning.
An Austin Police Department news release issued Monday morning said officers responded to the report of an assault in the Plaza Parking Lot shortly after 12:30 a.m. Upon arrival officers found a man who appeared to have been shot in the shoulder and leg and later learned another man had checked into the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Austin with what was described as a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
The criminal complaint says officers spoke with witnesses, who led them to locate and arrest 29-year-old Hector Ubaldo Serrano-Maldonado of Austin. The charges say Serrano-Maldonado and the gunshot victim found at the scene of the shooting had gotten into an argument then altercation that led to the eventual victim punching Serrano-Maldonado.
The complaint says Serrano-Maldonado retaliated by pulling a gun from his waistband and firing at least seven gunshots at the victim, striking him in his mid-right thigh and left shoulder. The victim was treated at the scene and taken to the Austin Hospital before being flown to Rochester for further care.
The second gunshot victim reported being in the area of the confrontation and shooting and was believed to have been hit in the leg by a bullet fragment. The charges say Serrano-Maldonado had ammunition on his person and that officers recovered a gun when they apprehended him at a residence in the 200 block of 7th St. Northwest.
Serrano-Maldonado was charged Monday with one count of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree assault. The judge in the case set his conditional bail at $100,000. His next court appearance is set for July 13.
