Tiny Northern Minnesota Town Rocked by Double-Murder
Babbit, MN (KROC-AM News) - Authorities in northern Minnesota are investigating a double murder.
The Babbitt Police Department says the bodies of two people were discovered in their home after officers were sent to the residence late Saturday night to conduct a welfare check. They were acting on information provided by police in Duluth, who indicated they were in contact with a man who had stated that he had killed his two roommates in Babbitt.
The victims were identified as 78-year-old Clifford and 79-year-old Christine Johnson. Babbitt police say the suspect, 54-year-old Roger Beldo, has no permanent address and had been staying temporarily with the couple.
He has been booked into the St. Louis County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder. The St. Louis County Attorney's Office is expected to file formal charges against him in the next couple of days. Babbitt police say the preliminary investigation has found that Beldo acted alone and is no ongoing threat to the public.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting with the investigation.
