Paynesville, MN (KROC-AM News ) - Authorities in central Minnesota are reporting that a man fired a shotgun at law enforcement officers during a standoff over the weekend.

A news release issued by the Stearns County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded Saturday morning to a report of a domestic disturbance at a residence near Paynesville. After contacting the victim, the deputies decided to take 58-year-old Nicholas Kaufenberg into custody.

The news release says the Paynesville man refused to come outside of his residence and made threatening comments towards the deputies if they attempted
the home. Officials say he also made comments about having several firearms and his willingness to use them.

The Man is Accused of Firing Multiple Shotgun Blasts at Members of a SWAT Team

The Sheriff's Office says the Stearns and Benton Counties SWAT team was called to the property shortly before 2 PM and attempted to talk Kaufenberg into surrendering. Approximately 5 1/2 hours later, the decision was made to enter the residence.

According to the news release, members of the SWAT team breached a bedroom window around 7:30 PM and Kaufenberg allegedly responded by firing multiple rounds from a shotgun. No injuries were reported, but one deputy had his safety glasses hit by suspected birdshot from one of the shotgun blasts.

The Sheriff's Office statement indicates several armored vehicles were then deployed at the property to protect the officers on the SWAT team before Kaufenberg was finally taken into custody without further incident.

Officials say Kaufenberg was transported to the Stearns County jail where he is being held pending the filing of formal charges.
