The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has reported over 40 outbreaks of norovirus so far in December, which is nearly double the typical number for this time of year.

Health officials are urging Minnesotans to take extra precautions as holiday gatherings approach to prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus, commonly known as the “stomach flu.”

What is Norovirus?

Norovirus is the leading cause of foodborne illness outbreaks in Minnesota and the most common cause of short-term vomiting and diarrhea in the United States.

Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramping, with some cases also involving low-grade fever, chills, headaches, and muscle aches. While illness usually resolves within a day or two without long-term effects, it is highly contagious and can strike repeatedly, most people experience norovirus about five times in their lives.

Minnesota Health Department's Norovirus Message: Be Proactive

“Particularly ahead of holiday gatherings, we want to make sure people are aware of this increase in norovirus outbreaks and taking steps to prevent spreading illness to family or friends,” said Jessica Hancock-Allen, infectious disease division director at MDH.

To minimize the risk, MDH recommends the following preventive measures:

  • Practice Proper Hand Hygiene: Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before handling food and after using the bathroom or changing diapers. Hand sanitizers are not effective against norovirus.
  • Stay Out of the Kitchen if Sick: Avoid preparing food for others if you have had vomiting or diarrhea within the past three days. Likewise, do not consume food prepared by someone who is unwell.
  • Disinfect Contaminated Surfaces: Use a household bleach solution to clean surfaces that have come into contact with vomit or diarrhea.
  • Cook Shellfish Thoroughly: Raw or undercooked shellfish can harbor norovirus.

Tips for Norovirus Recovery and When to Seek Help

If symptoms occur, MDH advises drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Most people recover without medical intervention, but those concerned should contact their healthcare provider.

Prevention of Norovirus in Public Spaces

Facilities like restaurants, schools, child care centers, and long-term care homes are encouraged to follow strict outbreak prevention guidelines and exclude staff or attendees with vomiting or diarrhea.
