St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - Governor Tim Walz today announced that he will convene a special session of the Minnesota Legislature on Monday.

The announcement followed the signing of an agreement by the governor and legislative leaders on the bills that will make up the state’s next two-year budget. According to veteran State Capitol correspondent Bill Werner, the agreement states that only 14 bills will be acted on during the special session, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

The list of bills includes the massive Health and Human Services budget bill, which cuts spending for disability services by $255 million. Werner says the agreement also covers the education appropriations bill— the largest single component of the state budget—along with higher education and transportation budgets.

The agreement signed today also includes a bonding bill for public infrastructure projects. Werner reports that it totals $750 million, aligning with what House legislative leaders proposed but falling far short of the bonding package sought by Senate Democrats.

Werner also notes that the controversial plan to eliminate state-subsidized MinnesotaCare coverage for undocumented immigrant adults will be presented to state lawmakers as a stand-alone bill. Legislative Republican leaders had wanted it included in an omnibus bill, but Democrats opted to separate it to avoid jeopardizing passage of the broader state budget.
