Minnesota Now Only Has Three Of These Once Common Sandwich Shops

A few years ago, I mused about a sandwich chain that once had locations all over the place that you can hardly find anymore in Minnesota. It recently came up in conversation, and I was wondering just how many of these once-common shops are left.

It turns out that the number is pretty small.

I'm talking, of course, about Quiznos. This sandwich shop built a brand on its toasted sub sandwiches (and a couple of creepy TV commercial mascots...mice? Other...creatures? See the commercial below.)

Growing up, there was one in the town I lived near. When I went to college in Bemidji, there was a Quiznos there. Living in Duluth, there was once a Quiznos here, too. When I would visit the Twin Cities, there were several all over the place. You get my point.

Don't get me wrong, I am not calling Quiznos the best in fine dining, but I appreciated their line of unique, toasty sandwiches, and they were enjoyable from time to time.

Now, there are only three Quiznos left in all of Minnesota. Where are they? What happened to the rest? Let's explore.

Where are Minnesota's remaining Quiznos locations?

According to the Quiznos website, there are only three remaining Quiznos in all of Minnesota, and they're all in the Twin Cities area.

What happened to the rest of Minnesota's Quiznos locations?

While individual stores around Minnesota may have closed for a variety of different reasons, the overall reason for a drop in the number of stores around the state and country as a whole comes down to money, as I'm sure you may have guessed.

The food website Food Republic explains that while there was no singular reason, company practices made it difficult for locations to turn a profit. This eventually led to a class action lawsuit filed by a group of franchisees that led to a settlement of over $200 million.

That and a series of other factors led to Quiznos locations across Minnesota and around the country closing.

As it stands today, there are only 6 locations between Minnesota, North & South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Aside from the three Twin Cities locations in Minnesota, there is one in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, one in Jamestown, North Dakota, and one in Grafton, Wisconsin.

Interestingly, there are 6 locations in Iowa alone, with three of them in the greater Des Moines area.
