The Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) posted an urgent reminder on its website today, emphasizing the importance of applying for a REAL ID ahead of the upcoming deadline.

As of November 1, 2024, only 38 percent of Minnesotans have a REAL ID.

Time to Get Your REAL ID, The Deadline is Almost Here!

Starting May 7, 2025, all Minnesotans will need a REAL ID (or a valid passport) to board domestic flights or enter certain federal buildings. A standard driver’s license won’t work anymore.

The REAL ID is part of a federal effort to improve identification security, but the important part for you is this: if you don’t have one when the deadline hits, you won’t be flying anywhere.

What You’ll Need to Get a REAL ID

Getting a REAL ID isn’t as complicated as it sounds.

“We understand the documents required for REAL ID can be confusing. We want to demystify that and make it easier for people to apply,” said Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) Director Pong Xiong.

Here’s what you need to bring:

  • Proof of identity, date of birth, and legal presence in the U.S.
    • Examples: Passport, birth certificate, or permanent resident card.
  • Proof of Minnesota residency (you’ll need two documents).
    • Examples: Bank statement, utility bill, tax return, or a current driver’s license with your address.
  • Your Social Security number (you don’t need the card itself, just the number).

Most people already have these documents at home, so it’s just a matter of gathering them up and heading to your local DVS office.

Tips to Make the REAL ID Process Easier

To save yourself time and hassle, keep these tips in mind:

  • Pre-apply online. You can upload your documents in advance to confirm they meet the requirements. Just don’t forget to bring the originals to the office.
  • Bring originals only. Photocopies, laminated documents, or digital scans won’t be accepted.
  • Check your name. If the name on your documents doesn’t match your current name, bring supporting documentation like a marriage certificate.
