10 Funny Minnesota Halloween Costumes You Can Make at Home
One of the most fun parts of Halloween for me as a kid growing up in Minnesota was creating my own costume out of whatever we had lying around the house.
I've got a list of fun, easy, and creative ways for you to dress up in a memorable costume this Halloween and have a costume that won't easily be forgotten.
REMEMBER THE DAYS OF HOMEMADE COSTUMES?
I remember going as a Fairy one year. My Mom dressed me in her prom dress, which looked like a long gown on me, then used cardboard to make a fairy wand and put a little crown on my head so I felt like a princess.
Other years as I grew older, I remember dressing up with one of my best friends, Ann, as a two-headed monster. We were small enough to both fit into her dad's big sweatshirt and his sweatpants. It was fun trying to walk around the neighborhood as one monster with three legs, with both of us just using one of our arms, while the other was in the costume. I think trick-or-treating was more fun that year, as we giggled falling down in the fall leaves multiple times and had to refill and refill our candy bag that we shared.

FUN IDEAS FOR ADULT AND KID COSTUMES THIS HALLOWEEN
Now that I'm an adult, going out to a Halloween party at a friend's can be even more fun if you create something unique, and here is a list of fun ideas that all come back to being a Minnesotan. See if any of these will work for you or your kids this year.
1. MINNESOTA VIKINGS SUPERFAN
How easy is this one? Grab your favorite Vikings t-shirt or jersey, get some purple and yellow face paint, some Viking Horns, maybe some pom poms and you're ready to go.
2. PRINCE
Find yourself a purple jacket and a white shirt with some ruffles...grab a toy guitar, and some boots or high heels, then go party like it's 1999.
3. THE MINNESOTA STATE FAIR
Wear a T-shirt that says 'Everything on a Stick!" Then attach some photos of corn dogs, cheese curds, and cookies. Oh! You could carry an ice cream pail and pretend it's a pail of Martha's chocolate chip cookies! Better yet, fill it up with plastic-wrapped chocolate chip cookies and hand them out to your friends.
4. PAUL BUNYAN
Going as Paul Bunyan should be pretty simple for us Minnesotans. Just grab a flannel shirt, your favorite pair of blue jeans, and your favorite cap. Maybe make a cardboard ax and carry a blue stuffed animal to represent Babe the Blue Ox.

5. A MINNESOTA MOSQUITO
Dress up in all black, and then add some cardboard homemade wings, and carry a sign that says "Minnesota State Bird." People will get it.
6. MINNESOTA HOTDISH
How do you dress up as food, you might say? Easy! Wear all brown clothing, and then attach photos of tater tots, green beans, and hamburger. If you have a casserole dish, you can carry that around, and you are officially in the game.
7. A MINNESOTA ICE FISHERMAN
Put on a winter coat, snow pants, boots, and a warm winter knitted hat, then make a cardboard fish, and carry a toy fishing pole. If you can find some way to look completely frozen, that would be cool too.
8. A MINNESOTA LOON
This is pretty much the same look as the Minnesota Mosquito costume. In fact, you could go as a couple. One as a loon, and one as a mosquito and carry a sign asking..." Which one of us is THE REAL Minnesota State bird?
9. THE MINNESOTA GOODBYE
I think this sounds like fun, but you have to be in to the moment. Wear regular clothing, carry your car keys around, and spend the entire evening saying things like, 'Well...I suppose we should get going,' without actually leaving.
10. ROAD CONSTRUCTION CREW
Grab a reflective vest, a hard hat, jeans, and some work boots. Carry a cardboard stop sign or a sign that says 'Road Closed.' Or carry a detour sign that directs them to the snack table for an extra few laughs.
What will you be dressing up as this Halloween? Maybe this list will give you some ideas for your own Minnesota Halloween costume. Happy Halloween.
