How Does Minnesota Stack Up When It Comes To Educational Innovation?
You wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat. You are having trouble breathing and you grasp at the glass of water at the side of your bed. The question won't leave your mind, so you shout it out loud: "WHERE DOES MINNESOTA RANK IN TERMS OF EDUCATIONAL INNOVATION?!"
Luckily, the folks at Smilehub have done a study that answers that very question.
To determine the states leading the way in educational innovation, SmileHub compared the 50 states across three key dimensions: 1) Virtual Learning & Education Accessibility, 2) Progressive Education Methods & Opportunities and 3) Innovative Education Recognition.
We evaluated those dimensions using 14 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the highest level of educational innovation. For metrics marked with an asterisk (*), the square root of the population was used to calculate the population size in order to avoid overcompensating for population differences across states.
We then determined each state’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score and used the resulting scores to rank-order the states.
According to those metrics, the best states for education innovation are (in order) California, New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Illinois. The bottom five (in order) are Nevada, South Dakota, North Dakota, Mississippi and West Virginia.
Minnesota is middle-of-the-pack when it comes to educational innovation, ranking #19 in the study. The Land of 10,000 Lakes ranked #8 in Virtual Learning and Education Accessibility and 22nd in Progressive Education Methods.
