Many forecasters, including those at the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, have described the beginning of October as a "roller coaster." Temperatures have been fluctuating between the 60s and 80s, but we all know how this ride is going to end.

This weekend would be a good time to dig out your warm clothes and take action to protect your home and garden. Colder weather is coming soon. You can read more about that below and see what forecasters say about snow before Halloween.

When Will The Temps Drop Below Freezing

Now is the time to protect your home. Minnesota's colder weather can cause significant damage and stress. Cover any exposed outdoor pipes, drain your faucets, and remove hoses. Don’t forget to drain water hoses and irrigation lines as well.

Make sure to clean your gutters to prevent ice dams or damage to your foundation and walls. This is also a good time to change your furnace filters and set your ceiling fan to rotate clockwise. Changing the fan helps create an updraft and redistributes warm air throughout the room.

Lows are expected to fall below freezing in much of Minnesota on Monday, and overnight temperatures could drop below 31 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday in many areas as well.

Will There Be Snow by Halloween?

In Minnesota, the timing of the first measurable snowfall varies by region. In the Twin Cities, the average date for the first snowfall is November 4th. In St. Cloud, the first inch of snow usually falls by November 15th, and in Rochester, it typically arrives around November 21st.

Local meteorologists aren’t mentioning snow just yet, but some national forecasters are predicting it may come sooner than expected.

The latest forecast from the Old Farmer's Almanac for our region—covering eastern North and South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin—anticipates rain and snow showers for the week of October 16th. From October 23-26, expect rain, snow, and colder weather, with rain and snow showers likely continuing from October 27-31, and temperatures remaining chilly.
