A few days ago, the Minnesota Zoo posted photos of three adorable Canada lynx kittens born earlier this spring.
Earlier this spring, our Canada lynx, Torvi, welcomed three healthy kittens—a special milestone for this remarkable species.
While Canada lynx kittens are occasionally born in accredited zoos, this is considered a milestone because breeding is carefully managed to help protect the species' future.
Minnesota Zoo Celebrates Canada Lynx Kittens While Mourning Unexpected Loss Of Mother
Unfortunately, the exciting birth of the three Canada lynx kittens was a bittersweet time for the team at the Minnesota Zoo. Their note on Facebook continued with the following heartbreaking news:
While we're thrilled to introduce these little ones, we're also saddened to share that Torvi unexpectedly passed away several weeks after giving birth due to a rare medical condition.
After Torvi's death, the team at the Minnesota Zoo "sprung into action to provide the three tiny kittens with round-the-clock care."
Canada Lynx Kittens Thriving After Tragic Loss at Minnesota Zoo
The lynx kittens are now 10 weeks old and, according to the statement on the Minnesota Zoo website, they are growing quickly and reaching new milestones.
At 10 weeks old, the kittens are finding their footing - exploring their surroundings on their oversized paws built for walking on snow. Their eyes are open, they're learning to eat independently, and they are forming trusting bonds with their new caretakers.
Where Are The Lynx Kittens Now?
One of the kittens has moved to another AZA-accredited zoo where he will serve as an ambassador animal and help educate visitors about wildlife conservation.
The other two lynx kittens, Freya and Ingrid, will be making their debut to the public this summer at the Minnesota Zoo.
