The latest round of winter weather has caused several schools to cancel activities and classes on Friday, January 23rd, 2026.  Below are the latest update regarding those closings and cancellations for Southeast Minnesota.

National Weather Service: Dangerous Cold Conditions for Parts of Southeast Minnesota

The National Weather Service recently posted an update to the severe cold weather that was forecasted for a large number of counties in Southeast Minnesota, Western Wisconsin, and parts of Iowa.  

Dangerously cold conditions move into the region tonight with wind chills as low as 50 below zero expected early Friday morning. Hazardous wind chills continue through the weekend, particularly during the overnight hours. Limit your time outside and bundle up if you must go out. - @NWSLaCross on X

If you do need to spend time outside, the recommendations from the National Weather Service are as follows:

  • limit or avoid time outdoors
  • dress in warm layers and cover all exposed skin
  • watch for signs of frostbite of hypothermia
  • stay hydrated but avoid alcohol or caffeine
  • stay dry, avoid overexertion
  • check on family, friends, and neighbors

These dangerous conditions have spurred closings, cancellations, and early releases for a variety of schools on Friday, January 23rd, 2026.

  • Houston Public Schools - Virtual learning Friday, e-learning day for January 23rd, 2025
  • Howard-Winneshiek Community Schools - Closed Friday. No AM activities.
  • Immanuel Lutheran School - Plainview - Closed Friday
