Suspect in Murder of Faribault Man Charged
Burnsville, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Burnsville man was charged today with the murder of a Faribault man in May.
The Dakota County Attorney's Office says 21-year-old Michael Lual Nhial is facing a second-degree intentional murder charge in connection with the death of David Stewart Chant. Court documents say the 59-year-old victim was found by his mother at Interlachen Park in Burnsville on the morning of May 3.
Prosecutors say Chant was discovered on the ground, partially under a picnic table, suffering from a severe head injury. Some walking sticks belonging to the victim were found broken and bent near his body, and a pair of shoes with blood evidence was recovered from a nearby porta potty. DNA testing determined the blood was from the victim.

A news release from the Dakota County Attorney's Office says investigators reviewed surveillance video from multiple security cameras. One video shows Nhial walking around the underground parking garage at his apartment complex wearing shoes matching the pair found at the crime scene.
Another video, captured in the area of the park where the murder occurred, contains audio of two distinct voices arguing, followed by thumping sounds. The criminal complaint says a voice believed to be the victim’s is heard saying, “Give me my cane back,” followed by more sounds of hitting, slapping, and arguing.
Dakota County officials say Nhial is currently in custody at the county jail, but he was also recently civilly committed due to mental illness and is awaiting placement at a treatment facility.
