The Albert Lea Police Department says the stabbing is tied to a domestic assault incident. Authorities issued a request for the public to avoid the 1000 block of Garfield Ave. late Tuesday morning.

It was described as an “active isolated incident.” Police say the stabbing occurred at a residence that lies less than a block to the east of Hawthorn Elementary School.

The victim was taken to the emergency room with a stab wound to their lower body. The victim’s current condition was not disclosed.

The stabbing and police response resulted in the Albert Lea School District placing the elementary into Secure, which means all of the school’s doors are locked and no one is allowed in or out of the building.

“This was taken as a safety precaution and instruction was continued. At no time were students in danger. We will continue to ensure student safety is our top priority, and continue to work with our school resource officer to stay informed about the situation,” reads a post on the school district’s Facebook page.

The school district describes the Secure Action as a precautionary measure.
