Rochester Public Schools Report Unexpected Enrollment Growth
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Enrollment in Rochester Public Schools is significantly higher than expected this fall.
The new enrollment numbers are included in a report submitted to the Minnesota Department of Education each October 1. The Rochester School District reported a total enrollment of 17,441 students.
First Enrollment Increase Since 2021
That represents an increase of 118 students compared to October 1 of last year. It marks the first time Rochester Public Schools have reported an enrollment increase since 2021.
While the student headcount was only up a modest seven-tenths of a percentage point compared to last fall, the increase is hundreds above the enrollment level projected earlier this year by the school district and in a separate projection developed by former Minnesota State Demographer Dr. Hazel Reinhardt.
The school district forecast predicted there would be 16,978 students enrolled this fall, while Dr. Reinhardt’s projection estimated 16,728 students. The actual enrollment is nearly 500 students above Dr. Reinhardt's prediction and 463 higher than the district forecast.
Enrollment Growth Adds $3.4 Million in Revenue
An agenda item for next Tuesday's Rochester School Board meeting says the higher-than-expected enrollment will produce an estimated $3.4 million in additional revenue for the current school year. The document states that the additional funding tied to the increase will help offset—but not eliminate—the need to identify more than $13 million in budget reductions to address the district’s long-range projected financial deficits.
