Charges: Eyewitness ID’d Gunman in Rochester’s Most Recent Murder
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Bail was set at $1 million today for the man accused in a fatal shooting that occurred outside a northwest Rochester apartment last Thursday.
Thirty-one-year-old Ibrahim Abukaar Abdi was arraigned today in Olmsted County Court on a criminal complaint charging him with the death of 35-year-old Sadik A. Yusuf. According to the court document, Rochester police officers responding to reports of a shooting at the Villages at Essex Park Apartments along 41st Street Northwest on the morning of July 3 found Yusuf outside one of the apartment buildings suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to his neck.
The criminal complaint says the officers spoke with an eyewitness to the shooting. The witness stated that he was with Abdi and a third person the morning of the shooting. He indicated they had visited the Western Union location on 37th Street Northwest to obtain some money before traveling to the apartment complex.

After the other person left, the witness told police that he and Abdi were outside the apartment building when Yusuf arrived in a vehicle, and he and Abdi began arguing "over money and disrespect." At some point during the dispute, the witness told investigators that he saw Yusuf take a bag of marijuana from Abdi, who responded by pulling out a gun and shooting Yusuf.
The witness reported that Abdi immediately left and that he attempted to render aid to Yusuf until police arrived at the scene.
The criminal complaint says investigators were able to identify and locate the other witness, who corroborated the first witness’s statement about the events leading up to their arrival at the apartment complex. He also told police that he later spoke with Abdi on the phone and that Abdi came to his home and was acting "weird and different."
According to the charges, Rochester police used data technology to track Abdi's phone to another apartment building at the Villages at Essex Park complex, where he was arrested on Monday. The criminal complaint indicates that he denied any involvement in the murder, denied knowing Yusuf, and denied being around the apartment complex on the day of the fatal shooting.
The court document indicates that the scene of the shooting was not visible to the surveillance cameras in the area, but surveillance video shows Abdi walking toward the site of the shooting immediately before it occurred and walking away immediately afterward.

He is charged with two counts of second-degree murder, second-degree assault, and illegal possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a violent crime. The criminal complaint states that he was prosecuted as a juvenile on charges of threats of violence and second-degree burglary.
