Charges-Shotgun Used in Blue Earth County New Year's Day Shooting

Eagle Lake, MN (KROC-AM News) - Conditional bail was set at $250,000 today for the Mankato area man accused of shooting his father on New Year's Day.

30-year-old Andrew David Douglas was arraigned this afternoon in Blue Earth County Court on a first-degree assault charge. It is alleged that he shot his 59-year-old father in the arm with a 12-gauge shotgun during an altercation in their Eagle Lake residence in the late afternoon of January 1.

According to the criminal complaint, Douglas called 911 and reported that he had shot another man in the arm in self-defense and the victim was "bleeding out." When Blue Earth County deputies arrived at the scene, they found Douglas exiting the mobile home with blood on his pants.

Inside, the responding officers found the victim holding his badly disfigured right arm. While he was being provided with medical aid at the scene, the court document says that he stated a few times, "I can't believe he did this." When asked by a deputy who did it, the victim replied "Andy. My boy."

The criminal complaint says the victim indicated the shooting occurred after he confronted his son about some missing or stolen jewelry. It also states that a woman living in the residence with the father and son told investigators that there was an argument over the son being asked to pawn and sell some of her items and that the son had woken his father to confront him.

The court document also indicates the woman told investigators the two men were involved in physical fights at least three or four times before the shooting occurred.

The father was transported to a hospital with what was described as a life-threatening gunshot wound. At the last report, Blue Earth County officials indicated he was hospitalized in stable but critical condition.
