Walmart Might Owe You Money, But Your Time To Claim It Is Running Out

Shoppers at Minnesota and Wisconsin's Walmart stores that purchased certain food items in the last several years may be due some money from the retailer in the wake of a class action lawsuit settlement, but your time to claim this money is running out.

With a footprint of 67 Minnesota and 88 Wisconsin locations, Walmart is a popular destination for groceries across the region. The class action lawsuit, which was initially filed in 2022, ended in a settlement that will pay customers who purchased certain grocery items from their stores over a period of over 5 years.

The deadline to claim your portion of this settlement is fast approaching, however. If you are eligible for your share of these settlement funds, here's what you need to know, including how much you could get and how to make your claim.

Why was there a class action lawsuit?

The reason for the filing of the class action lawsuit was over discrepancies customers paid for certain weighed items like some meat goods and fruit. The suit alleges that customers who purchased these items paid more than the lowest in-store advertised price for those products.

While Walmart denies any wrongdoing and the court didn't decide in favor of either party, the company and the plaintiff in the suit have agreed to a financial settlement.

Who is eligible for money from this Walmart settlement?

Anyone who purchased the impacted items named in the lawsuit from a Walmart in the United States or Puerto Rico from October 19, 2018, through and including January 19, 2024, is eligible.

While receipts from any eligible purchases will be helpful in claiming the full amount you are eligible for, you could still potentially claim some money even if you don't have the receipt anymore.

What items are included in this settlement?

A variety of weighted beef, poultry, pork, and seafood products and certain bagged citrus products including certain UPCs of oranges and tangerines are what is included in the settlement. Here are the specific meat UPCs and citrus UPCs named in the settlement.

How much could you receive in the settlement?

The total payout of the settlement will be $45,000,000, split among eligible customers making claims.

Customers with proper proof of purchases will receive 2% of the total cost of the specified products, up to a cap of $500. 

For customers without a receipt, attesting to the purchase of a certain amount of the specified items in the settlement could net a payment of between $10 and $25, depending on the items and quantities purchased.

Payments will be made for approved claims electronically via Venmo, Zelle, ACH, or a virtual pre-paid MasterCard. Paper checks can be requested for anyone unable to receive payments electronically.

What is the deadline and how do you make your claim?

The deadline to make a claim in this settlement is June 5, 2024. Those eligible to make a claim need to fill out a three-page claim form either online on the claims website or by submitting a claim through the mail. Mailed claims must be postmarked by June 5, 2024.
