Upper Red Lake Ice Report + New Walleye Regulation Info
Anglers across the region are hoping for continued cold to get out on the ice. Lakes are beginning to freeze over, and in Northern Minnesota, some lakes already have walkable ice. Be careful, have your spars, ice picks, and floating suits on if you venture out on early ice. Remember, no ice is safe ice. One of the most popular early-season ice fishing places to go is Upper Red Lake. Here's what the resorts are reporting.
Current Conditions For Upper Red Lake
Red Lake Remote Ice Fishing & Sleeper Rentals reports that they are finding a consistent 4 inches of ice on the lake, which is sufficient for walking traffic. However, they do say there is a pressure ridge on the side of the lake (which is normal), which indicates there must be some open water somewhere causing it. They're hoping that the colder weather this week will freeze it up and lock it in. They're hopeful to be open for walking traffic by the end of the week.
Jr's Corner Access Report
JR's Corner Access is also reporting 4 inches of ice in most areas. Their road is staked for a mile out and should be open this Thursday.

New Regulations For 2025
Walleye regulations are different this year. Beginning November 15, 2025, the walleye limit for daily and possession limit is four. That's down from the previous limit of 5. Only one walleye over 17" is allowed in possession. Fish Carcass retention requirements remain in effect.
