Have you ever wondered what that button on the side of a ceiling fan is for? Does it do anything?

It's absolutely there for a reason. If you're in a colder climate like we are right now in Minnesota (and will be for months), you should make sure you have the switch in the right direction. Not only will you be more comfortable, but you may save a little bit of money too!

Ceiling Fans Both Can Cool & Warm You

Ceiling fans work to help cool you in the summer. Most people are aware of that, right? But did you know they can also help keep your house warmer in the winter?

The switch changes the direction the blades rotate on your ceiling fan. In the summer months, you want the ceiling fan to rotate so you feel the air flowing downwards, towards you. Not every ceiling fan is the same, so the best way to figure this out is just to turn it on and see if you feel the breeze.

You want it blowing downwards to you for the cooling effect in the summer.

When we transition to the colder months in Minnesota, you should then flip the switch so that the airflow goes upwards in your house. This helps circulate the heat in the room without cooling you down.

It may not seem like a big deal, but trust me. Try it out and you'll be much more comfortable and warm this winter.
