Curbstoning is a crime trend where a scammer of sorts lures car shoppers to a vacant lot or side of the road to sell them a used car. Why is this problematic? Because they are doing so under false pretenses.

This scammer, known as a curbstoner, pretends to be the owner of the vehicle in order to evade the proper permits and licensing.

Not only do these scammers not have the right permits or licenses, they also do not have a place of business, hence the selling cars on the curb thing.

The sketchiness doesn't end there. Sometimes they set odometers back to make cars appear newer and may not hold the title to your vehicle. They also act swiftly so you don't have time to catch on.

To avoid becoming a victim, purchase a vehicle from a legitimate dealership and don't meet up with someone to purchase a car anywhere other than their residence if purchasing outside of one.
