The good news is, most moms aren’t looking for fancy gifts or expensive plans on Mother's Day anyway. What really matters to her is the thought you put into it and the time you spend together. A free day at a local attraction or a shared meal from a takeout deal can be just as meaningful as any big-ticket gift, I'd say, maybe even more so.
So... Where Did Mother’s Day Even Come From?
We all know Mother’s Day as the day for flowers, brunch, and heartfelt cards, but the idea of celebrating moms has actually been around for a long time.
Ancient Greeks had festivals to honor Rhea, the mother of the gods. In the UK, there was “Mothering Sunday,” which started as a day to return to the church you were baptized at (your “mothering church”), and over time, the focus shifted to honoring moms. But here in the U.S., it was Anna Jarvis who really pushed for a national holiday. After her mom passed away, she wanted a day to recognize everything moms do, and in 1914, it officially became a holiday.
Anna later got pretty mad about how commercial it all became. She imagined people writing heartfelt letters, not buying cards and booking brunches. Still, even with all the restaurant promos and flower ads, it’s nice to have a day to pause and give mom a well-deserved super thank you.
