Swimmer Killed by Apparent Electric Shock on Minnesota Lake

Cook, MN (MinnesotaNow) - Authorities are investigating an electrocution death on a northeastern Minnesota lake.

Swimmer Apparently Electrocuted

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says the deadly incident was reported shortly before 4:50 p.m. Friday on Lake Vermilion. Emergency crews responded to a property on the east end of the lake, about five miles north of Cook, where it was reported that a man was in the water and was being electrocuted by a boat.

Life Saving Measures Attempted

St. Louis County deputies, along with emergency personnel from the Cook Fire Department and EMS, responded to the scene and attempted life-saving measures before the 39-year-old victim was pronounced dead. His name has not been released.

Boat Electrical System Under Investigation

A preliminary investigation found that the man was swimming in the lake when he grabbed the docked boat. Witnesses stated that the man appeared to receive an electric shock and then lost consciousness.

The Sheriff's Office says the boat's electrical system appeared to be plugged into a nearby boathouse, which may have been the source of the deadly jolt of electricity.
