New Study Says Minnesota Is Now One of the Most Expensive Places in America to Fight a Cold
Cold season is officially here, which means you’re either walking around with a pocket full of cough drops or telling yourself it's just allergies... until it's not.
And as if the headache from the sinus congestion isn't enough, it's usually amplified by the price tag that comes with trying to feel human again.
A new study from a website called The Insulin Outlet added up the average cost of five common over-the-counter cold medicines at Target stores across the country and combined that with the average price of a standard doctor visit. Obviously, most of us aren’t booking a doctor visit every time we sneeze, so take the totals below with a grain of salt, but it’s a decent snapshot of how spendy “just a cold” can get.
And while this is not meant to be a deep medical study, it does give a look at what it takes to get through a basic winter bug. And apparently, here in Minnesota, that bug comes with a bigger bill than most other states.

Minnesota is a Top Five Most Expensive State to Fight a Cold
According to the study, Minnesota’s total cold care cost averages $166.75. The national average is $148, so we’re definitely on the uff-da end of that thermometer.
Here’s the full top five states where catching a cold costs the most:
- Alaska — $173.65
- New Jersey — $172.35
- New York — $168.85
- Minnesota — $166.75
- California — $166.25
The Cheapest States to Battle a Cold
Some of our neighbors get off much easier. The lowest-cost states include:
- Iowa — $131.35
- Kansas — $134.85
- South Dakota — $134.85
- Arkansas — $135.35
- Tennessee — $135.55
