8/7/24 UPDATE: When this story was first published (in March 2023), the property below *was* going to be rented by the state of Minnesota as a residence for the governor and his family while the official Governor's residence was being renovated.

However, in April 2023, an agreement was reached for the governor and his family to instead temporarily reside at Eastcliff, the then-vacant St. Paul home usually occupied by the president of the University of Minnesota.

ORIGINAL STORY:

While the Minnesota Governor's Mansion is closed for a massive renovation project, Gov. Tim Walz and his family will be spending their time in this rental lake property.

Like many of us, I rented various apartments and townhomes while I saved for a downpayment on my first home. But, if you're like me, none of the places I rented were quite as nice as this home Gov. Walz will be renting starting later this year.

Now to be fair, I wasn't the Governor of Minnesota back when I was renting. And, Gov. Tim Walz isn't actually renting this home himself, either-- the state Department of Administration here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes is, and they just signed an 18-month lease on this property on Sunfish Lake in the southeast Twin Cities metro.

The Gov. and his family need a place to stay while the Minnesota Governor's Mansion, on Summit Avenue in St. Paul, undergoes a multi-million dollar renovation project starting in June. And, by state law, not just any old property was eligible to serve as the governor's temporary residence (check out all the specifics HERE.)

So, they, uh, settled for this property located at 25 Sunny Side Lane in Sunfish Lake. And, as MPR reports, it's pretty nice.

The five-bedroom, nearly 8,000-square-foot home is on a 3.5-acre lakeside lot. It comes a monthly rent of $17,326 (a total of $311,868 for 18 months.) The property, with a six-car garage, had been on the market for a few months for almost $2 million.

Of course, the Governor's Mansion in St. Paul isn't exactly a shack either. It was built in 1912 and features 9 fireplaces across 20 rooms with a total of 16,000 square feet.  Keep scrolling to check out the governor's new, temporary digs. And speaking of lake homes, keep scrolling to take a look at a pretty nice house Minnesota Gophers coach PJ Fleck sold last fall too.
