According to the BCA's preliminary investigation, St. Louis County deputies responded just before 9:30 a.m. on July 15 to a report of an arson incident. The report indicated that Wolf had started fires at his home and at neighboring homes. It also stated that Wolf was driving around on a riding lawnmower armed with a rifle.

When deputies from the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene, the BCA report says they located Wolf. He fired on them, and Wolf was shot in the resulting exchange of gunfire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
